APIRG: Alberta Public Interest Research Group

Resources we provide

The primary focus of the Alberta Public Interest Research Group (APIRG) is to provide support and resources to student working groups. Students and community members are always welcome to form working groups to address social, environmental, or community-based issues. New applications are accepted two times per year at the beginning of the fall and winter terms.

APIRG resources are not, however, restricted to working groups or their members. Student and community members are also encouraged to access APIRG services and resources.

Monetary Resources (a.k.a. Funding)

As per our mission statement, APIRG provides working group, student and community members with funding for research and social engagement projects working in the public interest.

Non-monetary Resources

• Free or low-cost meeting space
• A resource library, which includes books, videos, newspapers, and magazines
• Web hosting
• Text editing and graphic design training
• Computers, scanner and printer
• Phone lines and fax machine
• Video cameras, minidisk recorders and relevant software training
• Photocopier
• Button maker
• Staff support
• Assistance recruiting volunteers and promoting events
• Training opportunities (i.e. consensus decision-making, events coordination, media relations, etc.)
• On- and off-campus networking opportunities

In order to access these resources, individuals who are not U of A undergraduate students (or who have opted out of the APIRG dedicated fee) must become community members by filling out a community membership application and paying a fee ($6.00/yr).

Groups and individuals needing computer time, software training, large amounts of printing or photocopying and access to the button maker, video camera or minidisk recorders must make advance arrangements with APIRG staff.

Library Resources

APIRG's resource centre helps students make connections with professors, local organizations, student groups, and other students. Our resource library now contains over 500 books, 40 videos, and numerous magazines, journals and other publications. The materials in the APIRG library are available for student and community members to borrow. APIRG staff members are available to answer questions.

Event Calendar and Website

An APIRG staff member compiles a weekly events calendar and maintains a listserv to inform subscribers about community events. To subscribe to our listserv, please visit the stay informed page.
