Safe Zone

There are two basic aspects to the SafeZone mandate. The first goal is education. We hope to raise awareness about various GLBTQ issues that GLBTQ people face; with an emphasis on those specific issues that are faced by such people at a University campus. The second aspect is to create/train and identify GLBTQ allies that exist at the UofA and beyond.

During the 2003-2004 year we were able to lay down some important ground work that should help us make a bigger mark on campus for 2004-2005. We researched for and compiled an introductory package. In addition to this we also developed an introductory presentation that will be able to work in conjunction to this package. As well, we developed a logo and started to make buttons that we can disperse to people to identify them as allies/SafeZone members. In an effort to become more known on campus we met with and gave a presentation of our mandate/goals to the group InsideOut, which is a GLBTQ group on campus for staff and graduate students. There were also representatives at this meeting from the Student Distress Center, Human Rights, and the International Center.

For the upcoming year we are planning on expanding our presence on campus and hopefully getting more people from various groups and organizations on campus involved. We are also going to start giving our presentation to people and develop more specific presentations for the various topics that introductory presentation touches on.
