RAE (Resources for Academic Excellence) has initiated a new Saturday program for newcomer youth across Edmonton. The program is offered free of charge in partnership in EISA (Edmonton Immigrant Services Association). We are seeking volunteers to participate in activities and offer support to these youth.

The program is designed to aid youth with their school troubles and arrange fun extra circular activities for them as well. From 9-10am we plan to have mentoring if students need and from 10-12 we are planning different activities each week-from basketball and BBQ's to DJ sessions and hiphop dance! This is all on campus, with the possibility of off-campus trips. Come out and drop in! It is a very flexible program and you are welcome to come any week you wish! We start this coming weekend (April 16th) andare holding sessions in Business room 1-6, with the meeting place at APIRG in HUB mall (if lost or late, directions to activities will be posted at both APIRG and BUS 1-6).

If interested please contact us through email (rfae@ualberta.ca) or call Renuka at 709-7368 (leave a msg).

The concept of Resources for Academic Excellence (RAE) was established in January 2004. Since then the organization has gained recognition and support from other University of Alberta students and the community. RAE is dedicated to forming relationships between the newcomer community and post secondary students. Dedicated and knowledgeable university students will be paired with youth from the community, focusing ,in particular, on disadvantaged youth who face adversity due to their unfamiliarity with Canadian society, and a delinquent lifestyle.

The Objectives of RAE are to:

  • Promote equal opportunity for education
  • Promote consistent study habits
  • Provide a positive role model
  • Practice and build on communication skills
  • Establish a long term program in the community
  • Combat the effects of negative peer pressure.
  • Provide flexible and free-of-charge services

RAE is in the final stages of applying for RAE’s charity status. When approved by the federal government, RAE will be able to issues income tax receipts for gifts donated to our organization. We will have confirmation of our status and receive our charity number in approximately six months. Furthermore, RAE is registering as a Student’s Union group, which will allow us access to various university resources.
