La Chiva
Saludos:

La Chiva would like to invite you all to two Colombia solidarity events to take place during International Week 2007 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. These events are sponsored by La Chiva and the Alberta Public
Interest Research Group.

1. 'Terror and the Criminalization of Dissent in Colombia' - Thursday, February 1, 2007;
3:30-5:00pm; Timms Centre Lobby, University of Alberta

This session will focus on the current situation in Colombia as it pertains to social organizations. We will discuss their struggles for change in a country ravaged by wars on 'communism', 'drugs', and now 'terrorism' and how
the labelling of journalists, human rights activists, and opposition forces (among others!) as 'terrorists' is threatening struggles for social justice in Colombia.

2. 'Popular and Indigenous Struggles in Canada and Colombia' - Friday, February 2, 2007;
5:00-7:00pm; Tory Breezeway 1, University of Alberta

In this session, we will discuss and compare the struggles of indigenous peoples in Colombia and Canada. How can concern for what goes on 'there' be directed at what goes on 'here'? How are issues and struggles linked?

Speakers at both events will include:

Manuel Rozental: a Colombian surgeon; political, social justice and human rights activist; lecturer, writer, strategist; communicator and political analyst in exile in Canada. He is the Coordinator of Communications and
Foreign Affairs of the Nasa Indigenous Community in the Northern Cauca region of Colombia.

and

Justin Podur: a member of the Pueblos en Camino collective (www.en-camino.org ).
He is also a writer and editor for ZNet (www.zmag.org) and has reported from Colombia, Israel/Palestine, Venezuela, Haiti, and other places.Please come ready to learn, discuss, and strategize! We hope to see you
there!

Un abrazote,

Featured Artist: Nduke Otiono

Listen to Nduke Otiono on Rise Up Radio!

Nduka Otiono, writer, journalist and scholar, was born in Nigeria. He holds a Master's degree in English from the University of Ibadan, where he later became an Associate Lecturer in the Department of English. He has been the General Secretary of the Association of Nigerian Authors and a cultural activist, serving on many national
literary committees. His books include The Night Hides with a Knife (short stories), winner of the maiden ANA/Spectrum Prize for fiction; Voices in the Rainbow (poems), runner up for the ANA/Cadbury Poetry
Prize in 1997; We-Men: An Anthology of Men Writing on Women, co-edited with E.C. Osondu, described as the "subject of the greatest controversy in Nigerian literature"; and a new anthology he edited called Camouflage: Best of Contemporary Writing from Nigeria (2006).
In 2006 he was awarded the FS Chia fellowship for a PhD in English and Film Studies at the University of Alberta. He was a Guest Poet in the January, 2007 edition of UK-based Sentinel Online Poetry magazine. His forthcoming collection of poems is called Love in a Time of
Nightmares, of which Sunday Sun of Nigeria notes in a preview that the "verses…serve as a template for the lyrical, the deployment of narratives and folksy idioms that are enchanting. His journey motif flutters from Nigeria to Canada, as the author (Otiono) attempts to
bridge borders, and this, also, typifies … a troubadour's
life."
