Campus Community Garden

In its fourth year of existence, the campus community garden is in full swing. The garden is maintained according to organic practices outlined in our mandate.

Rows have been planted and lettuce beds have been built.  All plants have been doing well since we planted on May 27th. Even though we planted in late May, work in the garden began early in February. Staff and volunteers have built a greenhouse which also functions as a storage shed.

We laid down drip irrigation before the first planting to assist with water conservation. We're halfway through the gardening season and we have many more garden expansions planned. We intend to expand the flower portions of the garden to add more colour to the scene, and we're building a patio area within the garden for people to relax and enjoy our educational seminars.

The garden and the volunteers within it are supported by a garden coordinator hired through ECOS, the Students' Union's Sustainability Office. The garden coordinator for Summer 2006 is Travis Kennedy, a garden volunteer from last year. Travis facilitates educational sessions such as soil, water, or agricultural conservation throughout the summer on Saturdays.
