Edmonton Haiti Solidarity (EHS)

Edmonton Haiti Solidarity is an organization promoting awareness about the struggle of the Haitian people and participating in projects that advocates for Haitian sovereignty, popular democracy, and social justice for the people of Haiti.

Mandate:

Edmonton Haiti Solidarity is in existence to work in solidarity with the people of Haiti and that country’s diaspora to promote Haitian sovereignty, popular democracy, justice, peace, and equality. Committees across Canada such as EHS sprung up as a result of the Canadian government’s inaction to secure Haiti’s elected government during the rebellion and coup of February 2004. After thorough independent investigations, Canada was found to be complicit in Haiti’s destabilization, which led to an untenable situation for Haiti, its people, and its government. Consequently, these actions (or lack thereof) by the Canadian government are issues of public interest.

Goal

The EHS organization is in existence as a local committee of a larger coalition, the Canada Haiti Action Network (CHAN), to help the people of Haiti establish and maintain a prosperous quality of life for all in Haiti. The intentions of EHS are to promote awareness about Haiti and their struggle for sovereignty, unimpeded popular democracy, and social justice to the public here in Edmonton, in the province of Alberta, and across Canada as well as to support grassroots actions and projects that assist in the realization of Haitian sovereignty, unimpeded popular democracy, and social justice.

It is crucial for organizations like EHS as part of the Canada-wide CHAN to hold the Canadian government accountable for their actions or inactions in securing and supporting the wishes of the Haitian people – something that the Canadian government has strayed from in the recent past and may stray from again if a situation arises.

Therefore, it is the goal of EHS to continue enlightening students and community members about the situation in Haiti and the Canadian government’s position on Haiti. It is also the goal of EHS to continue supporting independent and grassroots actions and projects that help achieve the justice, peace, and equality that the majority of Haitians want and deserve. These two goals of informing students and the public and supporting grassroots movements are not limited to keeping these two groups as spectators, but also to include them as participants within such a public interest issue.
