Trash Talk & Worm Composting – Wed Sept 13, 2pm in Quad
The goal is to introduce students to the City’s Master Composter/Recycler volunteer program. The workshop may start with an interactive activity that tests (or perhaps introduces or clarifies) participants’ knowledge of waste management in Edmonton (i.e. garbage, compost, recycling, reuse fairs, Eco Station.) This would lead into the volunteer opportunities as a MC/Rs (with guest MC/Rs telling a brief bit about their volunteer experience and such.) Finally, the group will learn about Eisenia foetida (red wigglers) and put together a few worm composting bins (thus learning how to vermicompost!) A few lucky participants will acquire the new worm bins.
The Master Composter/Recycler program began in 1991 with the purpose of broadening public awareness of the City’s efforts to manage waste through environmentally sustainable initiatives (see www.edmonton.ca/waste and find the “Master Composter” title in the left tool bar for more info.) Rena Unreiner is the Environmental Programs Assistant for the City, and coordinates the MC/R program. Anna Vesala is a Waste Management Education Program Specialist.
