APIRG Board Coordinator

The Alberta Public Interest Research Group (APIRG) is seeking a part-time board coordinator.  APIRG is a student organization that supports student research, education, and action initiatives on a wide variety of environmental and social justice issues.  For more information see www.apirg.org.

Start Date: August 1, 2005 (week of)

End Date: April 21, 2006

Position is regular part-time for a recurring eight-month period, 10 to 15 hours per week (pending final approval from the APIRG Board of Directors).

Salary:

Wages are currently under negotiation, but will be at least $11.66 per hour plus benefits, and likely higher.  Wages will be adjusted retroactively after final approval from APIRG/NASA.

Hours of Employment:

 Office hours are from 9am to 5pm . The Board Coordinator will also be required to attend occasional evening and weekend meetings and events. 

Staff is responsible to APIRG's volunteer Board of Directors and will be supervised by and work with the Board.

Responsibilities:

  • Pre-Board Meeting: type and distribute meeting agendas and gather/compile relevant information for decision-making process at meetings.
  • Board Meetings: attend all scheduled board meetings, participate in decision-making, and take minutes.
  • Post-Board Meeting: type, archive, and distribute minutes; post minutes to Web site and file hard copies appropriately; coordinate/discuss follow-up tasks with other staff members; and complete follow-up tasks as needed.
  • Assist in Board development (e.g.: bringing in specialists in facilitation if requested by the Board)
  • Prepare and distribute weekly events calendar.
  • Administer board e-mail list-serv and update contact information.
  • Assist the Board in planning the AGM, board retreats, and other events and projects.
  • As per collective agreement, communicate with financial coordinator regarding personal timesheets, salary, vacation, illness, and/or leave of absence.
  • Organize, update, and administer the Board filing system (in office cabinet and on computer) and update the web site.
  • Greet the public, volunteers, and members (walk-ins and phone calls) and respond to inquires.
  • Assist in training volunteers
  • Cooperate with other staff where overlap occurs and assist other staff with their duties as needed. 

13.  Possibly two hours each week for volunteer coordination, pending Board approval.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess these qualifications from paid or volunteer work.

  • Experience with a non-profit organization, NGOs, other PIRGs, activist experience, and/or community involvement.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in the English language.
  • Computer and typing skills (Excel, MS Word, Web navigation).
  • Writing/grammar and editorial skills.
  • Experience taking minutes
  • Experience with volunteer coordination.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Consensus and conflict resolution skills are a strong bonus.
