JOB POSTING: RESEARCHER/WRITER

The Alberta Public Interest Research Group (APIRG) is seeking one part-time casual Researcher/Writer. This is an Alberta Human Resources and Employment Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP) contract.

Contract Start Date: 2 June 2008
Contract End Date:  22 August 2008
Position is 35 hrs/wk.
The term of position is 12 weeks.

Salary:  Hourly wage is $14.00/hour.

Hours and Place of Employment: The employee will work out of the APIRG office, which is located on the University of Alberta campus. Hours of work will be 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday.

All APIRG staff members are also members of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA). This position is subject to the terms of the Collective Agreement between APIRG and NASA. Mandatory employment related costs (EI, CPP, and income tax) and NASA union dues will be deducted by APIRG from each cheque.

Roles and Responsibilities:
The key role of the Researcher/Writer will be to administer an organizational evaluation and assessment based on existing documents. Tasks related to the project include:

  • Review existing documents related to services provided by APIRG (including recipient reports, board member evaluation forms, board meeting minutes, policies and bylaws, etc.)
  • Research and compile materials related to APIRG’S past and present operations
  • Interview former and current staff, board and volunteer members
  • Submit a final report, including recommendations for improved funding and service provision
  • Attend bi-weekly meetings with APIRG staff and board

Qualifications:

  • As per STEP requirements, STEP employees must be:
    • Unemployed or underemployed (working less than 20 hours per week)
    • Legally entitled to work in Canada
    • Not enrolled in full-time studies while working under STEP
    • Already enrolled in, planning to attend or recently graduated from post-secondary education or training.
  • Excellent project-based research skills
  • Good interpersonal and professional communication (verbal and written) 
  • Familiarity with various computer programs –word processing, databases, internet and email
  • Able to take initiative and work independently, as well be able to work as a part of a team
  • Knowledge of APIRG and student organizing will be an asset
